Pushkar camel Fair is held every year in the month of Kartik (October or November according to Gregorian calendar). This is the largest cattle fair in India and in the world. This fair is celebrated for religious and cultural purposes. As Pushkar is a holy city in India, in the old times' people, came here in the month of Kartik to take a dip in the Pushkar Lake to wash their sins. As in old times, the transport was either camels, horses, bullock carts etc. After their rituals at the holy lake, people has started tarding the horses and bullocks which they used for transportation. So, for this reason, Pushkar camel fair became one the most important cattle fair in India.
As this fair is organized during the month of Kartik (October, November) when thousands of people from different parts of the Rajasthan and around the world came here to celebrate this festival with joy. There are lots of cultural activities are organized for locals and tourists like camel race, traditional dress competition, mustache competition etc. This small town becomes a cultural phenomenon and epicenter of colorfully dressed peoples, musicians, acrobats, folk dancers, traders, comedians, ‘sadhus’ and tourists.
The camel and cattle trading are at their peak during the first half of festival period. During the latter half, religious activities dominate the scenario. Devotees take dips in the holy "Sarovar" lake, as the sacred water is known to bestow salvation. This small town is transformed into a spectacular fair ground, as rows of make shift stalls display an entire range of objects of art to daily utility stuff. Decoration items for cattle, camel, and women, everything is sold together. Small handicraft items are the best bargain for buying souvenirs. Camel races, horse races, acrobatics, folk dance, and music are some of its highlights. Camel judging competitions are quite popular with animal lovers. Each evening brings different folk dances and music of Rajasthan, performers delivering live shows to the roaring and applauding crowds. Pushkar camel fair has its own magic and it's a lifetime experience for travelers want to travel to India.
